"AKOM" was established in New York, USA in the mid-1940s as "ASSOCIATED KNITTED OUTERWEAR MILLS, INC." "AKOM" KNITWEAR was born from the initials of the company name. At that time, it gave design to SPORTS WEAR such as SWEAT and PARKA, which were innovative in design and focused on functionality, and established its position as suitable for street wear. Despite existing for only about 20 years until the late 1960s, many of its masterpieces, which pursued unique functionality and design, still enjoy high acclaim and strong popularity in the vintage market.
This model was created with the image of what "AKOM" would have made if they had produced an AFTER HOODIE at that time. The original pattern is based on a 1950s freedom sleeve body.
Freedom sleeve specification, cotton thread stitching, made in Japan. The length and sleeve length are slightly longer than vintage items.
This is a reproduction of a vintage AKOM freedom sleeve sweatshirt. It is a middle-ounce 10.7 oz fabric, dyed with sulfur dye that allows for aging.
It is knitted on a rare 1970s tubular old-style small-gauge knitting machine, and brushed first while still tubular without opening using a special brushing machine. The XL size uses a custom knitting machine to achieve a big size that was not available in vintage items. Furthermore, it is bleached at high temperatures using an old-style winching machine for a long time, then washed and dried using a large tumbler. This time-consuming process results in a fabric with a very good texture.
