"AKOM" was established in the mid-1940s as "ASSOCIATED KNITTED OUTERWEAR MILLS, INC." in New York, USA. From the initials of the company name, "AKOM" KNITWEAR was born. At the time, they added design elements to functional sportswear such as SWEATs and PARKAs, which had innovative designs and prioritized functionality, establishing their status as wearable street clothes. Although it existed for only about 20 years until the late 1960s, many of its masterpieces, which pursued unique research in functionality and design, are still highly regarded and popular in the vintage market.
This model was created with the image of how "AKOM" would have made an AFTER HOODIE if they had existed at that time. The original pattern was taken from a 1950s freedom sleeve body.
Freedom sleeve specification, cotton sewing thread, made in Japan. The length and sleeve length are slightly extended compared to vintage items.
This is a reproduction inspired by vintage AKOM freedom sleeve sweatshirts. It is a middle-ounce 10.7 oz fabric, and the dye is sulfur-dyed, which allows for enjoying changes over time.
It is knitted on a rare 70s seamless old-fashioned small-gauge knitting machine, and the napping is applied first while it is still seamless using a special napping machine without opening it. The XL size uses a custom knitting machine to achieve a big size that was not available in vintage items. Furthermore, it is exposed to high temperatures for a long time using an old-fashioned winch machine, washed, and the drying process uses a large tumbler, resulting in a fabric with a very pleasant texture created with time and effort.
